Subject: Re: E46 Factory Alarm System - Master Key Issue

By pressing the lock button once the doors should lock and the clown nose should flash one quick flash every 3 to 5 seconds.
If you press the lock button twice within 5 or so seconds, the lamp should light solid for about a second then begin to flash as above. (This double press disables the level sensor to allow for towing).
If the doors lock and the park lamps flash but the clown nose does not flash you either do not have an alarm or there is an issue with the alarm.

Issues with the alarm system sometimes let you know by double beeping the horn, setting the alarm off, or immediately unlocking the doors forcing you to 'relock' every time you press the lock button.

Consider visiting a BMW dealer or Indy shop to have the keys coded.
I set mine so that my key is matched to my preferences while my wife's is set to hers. For instance I hate when the car automatically locks when I drive away so I disabled that and I have the car unlock all doors on the first press. This in addition to setting the seats, mirrors, HVAC, and radio to my settings.

I don't know the same things that you don't know.
